ABOUT OIL FREE SOUTHLAND

The Oil Free Southland Group was formed as a result of a community meeting that was held in Invercargill on January 14th, 2014.  Information and concerns were shared and questions were answered by representatives of the conservation group Greenpeace.  Oil Free Southland is a non-violent group of community members who share a common goal - to be informed, involved and pro-active in keeping Southland's region beautiful.

More Info:

Not everything has been above board and known to the public.
There are some rather disturbing facts that are not advertised.
For example:
The new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which is responsible for the regulation of deep sea oil drilling ithin the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will not be up and running in time for the scheduled start of drilling, while a transitional regime allows drilling to proceed as a discretionary activity.

There is a clear lack of risk-based regulatory approach and preparedness.

More jobs?  More wealth?

Despite what has been suggested, New Zealand stands to receive as little as a 5% royalty for oil recovered.  Onshore and offshore oil and gas employs a tiny 1,100 people (or 0.06%) fo the NZ workforce compared to the 214,000 jobs in manufacturing, 110,000 in tourism and 110,000 in agriculture, forestry and fisheries.  There will be a few local jobs during the exploratory phase and the community will not see lower fuel prices as a result as any products found will be shipped overseas.
